Nerds rejoice

Submitted by Sarah K. on Thu, 01/21/2010 - 6:12pm.

We've got two new(ish) local sci/fi releases I'm really looking forward to reading. The first is Cherie Priest's novel Boneshaker - steampunk zombies destroy Seattle? Sign me up. She'll be here in Oly on April 3rd, reading at the library, and I hear she is both charming and delightful.

The second book - and I actually fangirl squeed when I saw it on the new arrivals cart - is Robin Hobb's newest book, Dragon Keeper, the first book in a new series set in the Rain Wilds, happy news for fellow fans of the Farseer series. Look for it with the other new fiction arrivals on the front table.

Also on my reading pile is Cory Doctorow's new book Makers. If you've talked to me in the past year, I've probably tried to convince you to read his awesomely inspirational anti-authoritarian young adult novel, Little Brother (which we also still have in stock - it's not too late!), and I've heard Makers is equally great.

If I've missed something you think we should carry, email me and let me know! I get my very best recommendations from you, my fellow book-reading nerds.

Seems a very interesting

Submitted by Lexie P on Wed, 02/24/2010 - 12:05am.

Seems a very interesting story. I really love to check this out. I hope I couldn’t miss any of the updates with new stories you have. Anyway, speaking of stories, I remember, the movie reviews for Shutter Island are coming out as sort of a mixed bag. It certainly does seem a notch below other films by Martin Scorcese – it seems closer to a film like The Haunting rather than Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, Gangs of New York, or The Departed, doesn't it? Still – most people have been pretty positive about Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role (if he has grosses from most of his films even his grandchildren won't ever need payday loans) and the rest of the cast – and I think I heard it was from a book written by the same guy who wrote Mystic River.
